James “Jim” Edward Schrum, 82, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 5, 2026. Jim was born on January 24, 1944, in Indianapolis to Mary and Otto Schrum. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and later served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam era.
Jim was quiet, private, and practical. He was not the kind of man who sought attention. He was raised in a generation that often showed care through reliability more than words. Jim expressed himself in steady and useful ways. He did what needed to be done without making much of it.
Jim retired from Charlie’s TV and Appliances, where his natural interest in electronics fit well. He liked knowing how things worked. He had a patient and careful way of troubleshooting problems. Whether repairing equipment, working with sound, or keeping up with computers as technology changed, Jim respected the details. He understood that most things worth fixing required time, attention, and a steady hand.
His service did not end with his time in the Army. It continued in the way he showed up for his friends and community. He offered his time, help, and steady presence in the quiet and practical way that suited him best.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Otto Schrum; his sisters, Mary Ellen Krause, Betty Walters, and Pauline Schrum; and his brothers, Martin “Sonny” Schrum and Ralph Schrum. As the last of his brothers and sisters to pass, Jim’s death marks the closing of a generation in the Schrum family.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
As the last surviving child of Mary and Otto Schrum, his passing closes one chapter, but his memory remains part of the Schrum family’s continuing story.
A visitation will be held in Jim's honor 10-12pm Wednesday May 13th, 2026, the service will follow at 12pm all to take place at Flanner Buchana-Washington Park East Funeral Center. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
