James S. Carmichael

James S. Carmichael, 84, of Carmel, Indiana passed away December 13, 2023.  He was born September 20, 1939, in Martinsville, Indiana the son of the late Willard and Iva (Burnett) Carmichael.  He married Ellen Mahin on June 30, 1963. 

Jim attended Indiana University and earned his doctoral degree from the IU School of Optometry. Following graduation, he and Ellen moved to Valparaiso, Indiana where he established a 40-year private practice. There, he was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and a member and leader in the Kiwanis Club. Jim also actively served as an adult leader with Boy Scout Troop 907 and was a member and avid golfer at Valparaiso Country Club. 

After retirement, Jim and Ellen relocated to Carmel, Indiana and joined Zionsville Christian Church.  Jim volunteered at the Grace Church Food Pantry and played golf with friends. More than anything, though, he enjoyed spending time with his family.  

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ellen Carmichael; two children, Jennifer Carmichael (Douglas) Clark and Jeffrey (Marcia) Carmichael; four grandchildren, Jarod Clark, Paige Clark, Abigail Carmichael, and Christina Carmichael; and a sister, P.J. Kennedy.  

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on January 13, 2024 at 11:00 am at Zionsville Christian Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Zionsville Christian Church or the Grace Church Food Pantry.  Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Carmel.  Online condolences may be shared by visiting www.flannerbuchanan.com.
