James Robert Cooning

James Robert Cooning, 94, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away September 22, 2021. He was born on September 13, 1927 in Indianapolis to the late Leon J. and Ethel H. Caylar Cooning.

After graduating from Arsenal Tech High School, he went on to join the Military and served from August of 1945 to December of 1949 as a Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a proud Korean War Veteran. Following his service, he went on to work in the automotive industry. He retired after 35 years with Chrysler acting as a production superintendent.

He was a dedicated father and husband. He was also active in his community and was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and the Scottish Rite.

James is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Grace A. Cooning; loving children, Michael J. (Pam) Cooning of Denver, NC, Judith K. (Steve) Kerr of Indianapolis, IN, Kathleen S. (Scott) Erickson of Naples, FL, and Peggy J. (Doug Lepter) Cooning of Nashville, TN; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in passing by his twin sister, Johanna Lewis and brothers, Leon J. Cooning Jr. and Jack Cooning.

A Funeral Memorial Service will be held in celebration of both James and his beloved wife, Grace, on Friday, December 17, 2021. A time of visitation will be held from 12:00-1:30PM with funeral service to begin at 1:30PM all to be held at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46229.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 2015 South Arlington Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46203.
