James Arthur Payne I, affectionately known as “Pappy” to everyone who knew him, not just his grandchildren. Pappy lived a fulfilling life and had a contagious smile and a kind heart. Pappy was always a jokester and spread joy throughout his lifetime, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and hope in Jesus Christ. Pappy passed away on 3/16, a reminder of John 3:16, which says “For God so loved the world he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Pappy had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and will be with Him for eternity.
Pappy is a veteran of the United States Army, and he worked in Information Technology for several employers including State of Indiana, RCI, Cummins Engines and Lockheed Martin. Pappy loved animals and finished his career working in animal control where he also investigated dog fighting cases.
Among Pappy’s greatest joys was serving at “Supercamperific”, a Christian children’s camp, for more than 20 years. Pappy served as cook, counselor, recreation, entertainment, and snack shop. Pappy’s humor and love impacted the lives of hundreds of children during his years at the camp.
Pappy was preceded in death by his parents, John Payne Sr., and his mother Lorena. His brother John Payne Jr., and his stepson Joshua Cope. Pappy is survived by his wife Rita, his children, James II, Kenny, Derrick (Mandy) Jodi (Alex), as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pappy had many cousins he loved but there were four special “double cousins” (their parents were a set of brothers who married a set of sisters) who were like sisters to him. Linda, Geraldine, Jennifer and Tamara (deceased).
