James Matthiesen

May 10, 1926 — July 2, 2014

James A. Matthiesen of Indianapolis, IN died on July 2, 2014 at the age of 88. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Florence E. Matthiesen. James was awarded the honors of Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his Army service during WW II. He is survived by his children Jay Matthiesen (Jackie) and Carol Waddell (Burt), grandchildren, Jenell Fairman (Rob), Jodi Wickenkamp (Eric) and Jeannie Glasstetter (Marc), and 8 great-grandchildren A letter from Jim's son, Jay Matthiesen, to those who knew Jim: So many of you knew dad well. It is comforting to know how much he meant to each of you in a most personal and special way. Now he is back together with my mother, Florence Elizabeth (Plice) Matthiesen, just the way he wanted it for so very long. The family will all gather one more time for a military tribute in recognition of his life and his service to our great country. He was so very proud to be a veteran, and I am so thankful that I was able to join him on the Honors Flight to Washington, D.C. while his health would still allow it. Dad will always be remembered for turning so many moments into something special and for his loving dedication to our family. Soon we will be able to spread his ashes at the cabin in Minnesota where we can sit on a memorial bench engraved in memory of both of my parents. For our extended family, that is home and we are comforted knowing they will both be joined together once again. They loved being there and will remain for eternity. Let us all give thanks for James Matthiesen who lived among us for 88 years. We are profoundly saddened by his death, but the significant life he lived remains as comfort. He lives with his God now and we celebrate his transition. ~Jay Matthiesen
