James "Jim" David Bates Sr. 88 of Indianapolis died January 08, 2013. Jim was born on November 01, 1924 in Indianapolis to Ernest and Gladys (Christian) Bates. Jim was an Army veteran during WWII where he served under General Patton and on D-Day was on Omaha Beach. After serving our country Jim was a painter for Naval Avionics. Jim was also an entrepreneur where he owned and operated J.D. Bates Custom Builder where he retired in 2002. Jim was an active member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church and the Ben Davis Lions Club and the VFW. Jim served the community and gave of his time talents and treasures as he served every Saturday at the Westside Lord's Pantry. Jim was preceded in death by his parent and one sister and three brothers. Calling for Jim will be held on Friday January 11, 2013 at Flanner and Buchanan- Speedway from 3 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 12, 2013 at Bridgeport United Methodist Church 1305 South Bridgeport Road Indianapolis, IN 46231 at 11am. Jim is survived by his loving wife Rosemary Louise (Gray) Bates who he married on May 04, 1945. Jim is also survived by their children James David Bates Jr. and Nancy Louise (Terry) Osborne and his grandchildren Bart and Brad Bates, Susan Sutton, Michael Bates, Joshua Brown, David, Daniel and Savannah Osborne and his great grandchildren Brandi and Kori Bates, Alex Passarello, Drew Stalba, Alexis and Lauren Sutton and Kennadee Bates. Burial will be in West Ridge Park Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the church or to Habitat for Humanity.
