James Hoover

James Edward Hoover Age 84 of Indianapolis, died August 26, 2012. He was born December 1, 1927 in Indianapolis to Truman D. and Mildred Mickel Hoover. He graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1949, and an MS in Industrial Engineering in 1950. Jim taught engineering at Purdue University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War primarily teaching industrial engineering at Rock Island Ordnance Arsenal. He married Katherine Cox Hoover May 22, 1954 in Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, and they had 40 years of happy marriage until her death in 1994. Jim was an employee of Eli Lilly for 37 years retiring as Director of Systems Security. During his career he spent five years in England responsible for the Lilly manufacturing plant at Basingstoke. On July 22, 1995 he married Carroll Marie Busard Brown Hoover in Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. Jim was a member of the Franklin College Board of Trustees. He was the first president of Historic Landmarks of Indiana, past president/Chairman of Camp Fire USA of Indiana, Day Nursery, Executive Services Corps, Indiana Grantmakers Alliance and the Society for the Advancement of Management. He was also a former board member of the National Camp Fire USA, Children's Bureau of Indianapolis and Chamber of Commerce. Jim received the Distinguished Engineer Alumni Award from Purdue University in 2011, and also received the Frederick M. Hadley and the Silver Service awards from the Executive Service Corps and the Gulick Award from Camp Fire USA. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and Meridian Hills Country Club. In 1992 Jim established the Hoover Family Foundation providing grants to non-profit organizations supporting self sufficiency of individuals in the Indianapolis and Portland, Oregon areas. He was joined in this endeavor in 1995 by family members David Hoover (Indianapolis) and Cynthia Hoover and Glen Friedman (Portland). Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoover Family Foundation, Franklin College or the Second Presbyterian Church. Jim is survived by his wife, Carroll Brown Hoover, children Anne E., Silver Springs, MD (Bryan Brown), David C. Indianapolis (Janine) and Cynthia K. Hoover, West Linn, OR (Glen Friedman), three grandchildren, Christy and Beth (MD) and Zachary (OR), five step grandchildren, Kellie (FL) and Jill (CA), Matt (Tokyo, Japan), Sha and Julie (MD) and six step great grandchildren. Additional survivors include step children Richard F. Jr. (Karen) Okemos (MI) and Robert B. Brown (Ruth Myrehn) Zionsville, IN and five step grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Broad Ripple- 1305 E. Broad Ripple Ave. from 5-7 pm with services on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 1 pm from the funeral center. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
