James David Hicks, 78, of Indianapolis passed away on July 10, 2026. James (Jim) was born in Muncie, Indiana on February 18, 1948 to parents, Emory J. Hicks and Marjory Tolle (Hicks). Jim graduated from Northmont Highschool and went on to earn a B.S in Accounting from Wright State University later earning his M.S. in Political Science from Ball State University. Jim served his country honorably in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, from 1968-1972.
Jim worked as a Systems Accountant during his career, at Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS, DoD) retiring in August 31, 2012, dedicating 36 years of service. He was a member of several music bands throughout Indianapolis, as an accomplished Trombonist dedicating over fifty (50) years of his life towards music. Jim played with Billy Wooten Band, Tommy Wills Big Band, New Ventures, Jimmy Coe Big Band later forming Urban Renewal through Clifford Ratliff, West Winds Big Band, and was featured in the supporting orchestras for Wayne Newton, the Four Tops, Temptations, and Lou Rawls during his prime musical years. Later he joined several local bands, however certainly not limited to, Indianapolis Symphonic Band (ISB), New Horizons Band of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra, and supported Urban Renewal whenever possible during his later retirement years.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Marjory Hicks.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of nearly 58 years, Linda Glaser Hicks, and daughter Kathryn Hicks (Devoted Grand Dog, Charlie).
Friends may call from 12pm to 2pm Thursday July 16th, 2026, a funeral service will follow directly at 2pm, all to take place at Flanner Buchanan- Memorial Park Funeral Center 9350 E Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Maple Hill United Methodist Church and New Horizons Band of Indianapolis.
