James. E. Smith, 91, of Indianapolis passed away February 26th, 2022. He was born September 2nd, 1930, in Indianapolis to parents John and Veda (Eggers) Smith.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On December 1st, 1951, he married the love of his life, Patricia Garvey. They shared many wonderful years together and raised 5 children. Patricia passed away December 7th, 1983.
He worked as an engineer for Indiana Bell/AT&T for many years before retiring.
James was a hardworking gentleman with a great sense of humor. He and his wife were members of St. Simon Catholic Church and James donated a lot of his time to the parish. He was also a valued member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, and American Legion. A big baseball fan, James coached little leagues and loyally cheered for the Cincinnati Reds. He enjoyed restoring old toys and refinishing furniture. In his free time, James enjoyed fishing and causing trouble.
He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
James is survived by his sons Robert (Patricia), Rebecca, Ronald (Traci), Richard, and Randall Smith; Nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; and his sister Elsie Lytle.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings Raymond, Johnnie, Ethel, and Mildred.
Visitation for James will be Saturday March 5th, from 1pm-2pm at St. Simon Catholic Church. His mass will begin at 2pm. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
