James Brokaw

James Edward Brokaw, 84, Indianapolis, formerly of Zionsville, died on Nov. 7. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, on April 3, 1927, to the late Edward and Helen (Blose) Brokaw. He attended Evansville College and graduated from Indiana University in 1950. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Carolyn Elizabeth "Betty" Farmer on July 1, 1951. Jim worked in production management at Pittman Moore/Dow Chemical, until he retired in 1989. He also served as a member of the Zionsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Montgomery, Ohio, Fire Department, as a photographer, training officer, and EMT. Jim was a former member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Montgomery, Ohio, and of St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Carmel, where he was appointed Senior Warden. He was most recently a member of St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church in Zionsville. Jim and his family enjoyed many years of camping at Waycross Episcopal Camp in Brown County, Ind., and he served on the Waycross Board of Directors for three years. After retirement, Jim and Betty enjoyed traveling and they attended 34 Elderhostel programs in the United States. They also faithfully attended their grandchildren's sporting and academic events. In addition to Betty, his loving wife of 60 years, Jim is survived by his children: Dr. Susan Brokaw (Dr. Dirk Wonnell), Steven Brokaw (Stephanie), Robert Brokaw (Jill), Dr. David Brokaw (Christine), and Carol B. Brightwell; and nine grandchildren: Luke Wonnell (Lauren), Clay Wonnell, Keith Brokaw, David Brokaw, Grant Brokaw, Mattie Brokaw, James Brokaw, John Brokaw and Tyler Brightwell. Services will be held at 2:30 on Sun., Nov. 13, at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry Street, Zionsville, Ind.
