James Bender

James Grant Bender, 72 of Carmel, died June 23, 2011. Jim was born February 1, 1939 in Warren, Ohio to the late John and Mary Bender. Jim served in the United States Marine Corps, following his military service he earned his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and his masters and doctorate degrees from Ohio State University. Jim worked as a staff engineer for General Motors, and retired from the Allison Transmission Division in Indianapolis. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and was an avid historian. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Emily (English) Bender; daughters, Mary Ellen (husband Steve) Snyder and Jamie Lynn (husband Chuck) Stapleton; sister, Jean Pietrangeli, and 4 grandchildren. Friends are invited to call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, June 27 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the Church. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts take the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association.
