Jacquelyn Ann "Jackie" Davis 69, a career journalist, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at her home in Indianapolis. She was born June 11, 1945, in Richmond, Ind., the first child of the late Donald and Helen (Haley) Malaney. Her childhood was spent in Michigan and Centerville, Ind., and she graduated from Centerville High school. She was a Ball State University graduate with a degree in journalism and was women's editor at the Muncie Star and worked at the Indianapolis News and Indianapolis Star. She also taught as an adjunct professor of journalism at Butler University. She was president of Woman's Press Club of Indiana from 1993 to 1996 and received its Communicator of Achievement award in 2007. She also was a member of Women in Communications, Inc.; National Federation of Press Women, where she served as treasurer and board member; and the Indianapolis Chapter of the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution. Her volunteer service extended to her children's elementary school, St. Richard's Episcopal School, and to community efforts such as the 1987 Pan-Am Games in Indianapolis, when she wore a green parrot costume as an Amigo mascot. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Gruich; father, Donald Jack Malaney; stepfather, Peter Gruich; and brothers Michael Malaney, Jack (Renee) Malaney and Allen Gruich. Survivors include her husband Michael J; son George Michael William (Kimberly) Davis, Carmel, Ind., and their children Jacquelyn Morgan Davis and Michael Patrick Davis; daughter Mary Kathryn Ellen Davis, Indianapolis; stepdaughter Laura Anne Davis, Cleremont, Fla.; stepson Sean Patrick Davis; brothers Dennis (Amy) Malaney, Farmington Hills, Mich., Peter (Anne) Gruich, Sterling Heights, Mich., and Dan Gruich, Tacoma, Wash.; brothers-in-law Steve (Paula) Davis, Hebron, Ind., and Mark Davis, Kokomo, Ind.; sister-in-law Kathy (Wayne) Loucas, Garland, Texas; nieces Mary Helen Malaney, Patty Malaney, Maggie Malaney, Melissa Robinson, Renae Swiatkowski, Caitlyn Loucas and Hanna Loucas; and nephew Graig Davis. Services will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Ave., with the Rev. Nancy Ferriani officiating. Visitation will be at Flanner and Buchanan from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Department of Journalism General Scholarship Fund, Ball State University, AJ 300, Muncie, IN 47306, in memory of Jackie Davis.
