Jack W. Bennett

November 20, 1927 — June 29, 2013

Jack was surrounded by his loved ones as his soul was lifted to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on June 29, 2013, 3:40 a.m. At the time of his soul's departure, he was happily welcomed into Heaven by the many loved ones who've preceded him in death. He was born in Brazil, Indiana on November 20, 1927 where, from his childhood recollections, he was surely known as the proverbial "Dennis the Menace". Around 1936 Jack's parents decided to move to the "big city" of Indianapolis, where Jack remained until June 29, 2013. In 1945, at 17 years of age, Jack convinced his Mom to give him her blessing and let him enlist in the Navy. He had just one class to finish at Ben Davis High School, but he was very eager to serve his country. Fortunately for his family, Jack returned and shared many exciting stories about the time he spent in the South Pacific during WW II. And, even though he left high school early to join the Navy, he received his high school diploma from Ben Davis High School through a special program that assists World War II Vets receive their high school diplomas. In 1946, Jack met the Love of His Life, Peggy Jean Burton and they were married later that same year. In 1954, they were blessed with a daughter and blessed again with a son in 1957. He has also been blessed with five beautiful grandchildren and eight gorgeous great grandchildren. Jack worked for 42 years at Allison Transmission where he was a Skilled Trades Tool and Die Maker who specialized in grinding machines. His most memorable time was spent at Plant #3 in a special corner of the tool room that his coworkers called Bennett's Cove. He took a massive amount of pride in his job at Allison Transmission and "gave his best" to every assignment...Jack's work ethics were impeccable. He was definitely a lion at times, but he left this earth as a gentle lamb. The past two weeks of being in the hospital and home hospice gave his family insight into the lamb that Jack really was and now is in Heaven. (Isaiah 40:11 - He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.} We love you, Daddio! You will be missed. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Peggy; children, Resa L. (Ray) McBride and Michael (Angie) Bennett, 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and one brother, Charles Bennett. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at Flanner and Buchanan - Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington Street.
