Jack Edward Scoggan

Jack Scoggan, age 92 passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026 in Plainfield, IN.

Jack was born on January 14, 1934 in Indianapolis, IN.

Jack was raised by his grandparents Earl C. and Iva A. Thompson.  While attending Washington High School he played football and ran track where he was named captain of the track team his senior year.  After graduating in 1952 he married the former Myrna Menges in 1953. They had four children together before ultimately divorcing in 1977.  Jack served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1957 earning awards for his sharpshooting skills.  He also played on the Army's baseball and softball teams.  In fact, he was so good that he was never sent overseas so he could continue to play on their teams. He also served his four year apprenticeship while learning to become a tool and die maker.  Upon completing his training he began his career first at Allison Automotive before going to his next workplace, Chevrolet Truck and Bus where he worked as a tool and die maker for almost 40 years, retiring in 1992.

Jack loved traveling, especially to Florida in the wintertime with his sweetheart, Carla.  He owned several motorcycles over the years and took great pleasure in being on the road, cruising on his bike.  Trips to Daytona and Charlotte were yearly adventures with his work buddies.

His other great love was the game of golf.  It was something he enjoyed doing for his whole life and it was a sad day when he could no longer hit the links with his old buddies from work or his son Bryan who he shared his love of the game with.

Jack was also a fan of auto racing, especially Indy Car with A.J. Foyt being his all-time favorite driver.  He attended many races throughout his life including NASCAR when it came to the Speedway.  He loved watching IU basketball and more recently, the Indiana Fever.  He loved watching Caitlin Clark play (he referred to her as "that girl" when his memory started to fade). His favorite sports team was the St. Louis Cardinals starting from when he was a little boy.  His favorite player was Stan "The Man" Musial who he admired for being a great player and an even greater man.

Lastly, Jack loved trains stemming from the fact that his beloved grandpa worked for the B & O Railroad while he was growing up.  He would say he wanted to work on the railroad when he grew up, but Grandpa E. discouraged that idea because you spent a lot of time away from home when you worked on the railroad and that would not be a good job for a family man.  Jack followed his grandpa's advice and became a tool and die maker but he never lost his love of trains.

Jack is survived by sons: David Scoggan, and Bryan Scoggan.

Daughters: Michelle (Rick) Burdine and Leesa (Louis) Weatherford.

Longtime sweetheart: Carla Baker.

Grandchildren: Tiffany (Herb) Ng, Justin (Lauren) Gardner, Jason Burdine, and Stephanie Burdine.

Brother: Kenny Howard

Six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Jack is preceded in death by: his grandparents Iva and Earl Thompson, mother: Sue Howard, sister: Barbara Jean Fleming, brothers: Bobby Howard and Tommy Howard.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM at Flanner Buchanan - Floral Park Funeral Center, located at 425 N. Holt Road, Indianapolis, IN 46222.

His funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM.
