K J.B. King, 82, of Indianapolis, passed away December 29, 2012. He was born February 11, 1930, in Indianapolis, the son of the late Dr. William E. and Anna (McKinney) King.
J.B. graduated from Shortridge High School in 1947; Indiana University (A.B. Government) in 1951; and University of Michigan Law School in 1954. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar and the Indiana Bar in 1954. He served in the United States Army, Heidelberg, Germany from 1955-1956.
J.B. was most recently retired as counsel 1995-2012 from Faegre Baker Daniels. Prior to that, he was Vice President and General Counsel of Guidant Corporation from 1994-2001; Vice President and General Counsel of Eli Lilly and Company from 1987-1995; and an attorney at Baker & Daniels from 1956-1987. He was also an adjunct Professor of Law, Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis from 1977-1985.
He was involved in the following professional, civic and business organizations: Board of Governors, Treasurer, and served on the Executive Committee of the Riley Children's Foundation; Vice Chairman of the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute; Trustee of the Eiteljorg Museum; Trustee and VP of the Indianapolis Marion County Building Authority; Emeritus Director and Past Chairman of the Indiana Legal Foundation; Indianapolis Legal Aid Society; Indiana Forum for Civil Justice (Policy Advisory Board); Conference Board Council of Chief Legal Officers (Executive Committee); Indianapolis Greater Progress Committee; Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Research Association (Legal Committee).
J.B. served as a director of the following companies: Guidant Corporation; Indianapolis Water Company; Early & Daniels Co.; General Grain, Inc.; Tidewater Grain Co.; and Bank One (Indianapolis).
He was the Campaign Manager for Governor Otis R. Bowen's Gubernatorial Campaigns of 1972 and 1976 and Special Tax Counsel to Governor Otis R. Bowen. He served on the Transition Committee for Secretary of Health and Human Resources for Otis R. Bowen and acted as Special Tax Counsel to the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee from 1971-1973. He was the Special Counsel for the Indiana Senate Finance Committee in 1971 and served as Vice Chairman State Election Board.
J.B. was a member of the following organizations: Lawyers Club of Indianapolis; The Hundred Club of Indianapolis; Indianapolis Bar Association; Indiana State Bar Association; Indiana Bar Foundation; Michigan State Bar Association; U.S. Federal District Court Bar; U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Bar; American Judicature Society; Association of General Counsels; National Tax Association; Tax Institute of America; Institute of Property Taxation; Committee on Interstate Allocation and Apportionment of Business Income; Taxation Committee of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce; The Service Club of Indianapolis; Kiwanis Club (Legion of Honor); Indiana Society of Chicago; Columbia Club; and Beta Theta Pi.
J.B. is survived by his wife, Ann Wantz King; daughter, Debbie King Andre (Doug); sons, Brian King (Pamela); and Dan King (Missy); granddaughters, Emily Andre and Grace King and grandson, David Andre (fiancée, Maura Bradley).
