Ira Lee Johnson of Indianapolis, IN, was born in Center Point, KY, on November 28, 1928 and passed on January 6, 2022 at the age of 93.
In June 1946, 17 year old Ira enlisted in the army at the end of World War II and served in the occupation of Japan and in the Korean Conflict. Ira was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal and Army Commendation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in November 1954 as Master Sergeant having served 8 1/2 years.
Ira is preceded in death by Vi, his wife of 62 1/2 years, and his brother Fred (wife Martha - deceased). He is survived by his sister Iva (husband Marion - deceased); son Michael (wife Patricia - deceased); his daughter Linda (husband Charlie); and his son Kevin (wife Lynnda); his grandchildren Thom, Jamie, Jason (wife Alicia), Edward, and Justin (wife Sherilyn); his great-grandchildren Jailin, Liani, Ehvah, Marley, Hannah, Gunner (wife Abby), Aubrey, Chloe, and Luke; and his great-great-grandson Cayden.
Ira was athletic and enjoyed many sports. He played basketball at Manual High School, basketball and baseball in the army and fast pitch softball. At 50 years old, Ira took up running - 5K, 10K, mini marathons, marathons, a 52 mile run. To support future generations of athletes, he helped build Community Little League, Howe HS Football Stadium, Scecina HS baseball field, and started Grass Roots Football League all in which his sons played.
Ira was an entrepreneur and started several drapery companies including: Cha-Lee Drapery Company, Melinke, and Rent-a-Drape in which his family worked in various roles.
Ira Johnson will be buried alongside his wife Vi at Flanner Buchanan-Memorial Park, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46229. Due to COVID and severe weather, the funeral will be a private family service with burial immediately following.
