Horace Henry 'Hoss' Pennington

April 24, 1951 — March 15, 2022

Indianapolis,, IN

Horace Henry ‘Hoss’ Pennington was born the eldest child to John Henry and Christine (Saunders) Pennington in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 24th, 1951.  He had two brothers, John Daryl and Anthony; all have preceded him in death.  Horace was named after his paternal grandfather, Horace Millibrew, and his father.

The family moved from Cincinnati to Indianapolis shortly after his father’s death when Horace was around four years old.  Horace attended elementary school at Indianapolis Public School 29 and Arsenal Technical High School.  He graduated from Arthur Campbell High School in 1971 where he played trumpet in the school jazz band.  Music was an important part of Horace’s life.  He enjoyed live bands and old school funk music and had a very extensive knowledge of music.

Horace met Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Brown in 1968.  They were married on July 22, 1972 and four children were born of their union:  Brandon, Sean, Deidre and Angela.  He moved his family to southern California in 1979.

Horace professed an early hope in Christ and attended New Liberty Baptist Church with his mother and brothers.  He later joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.  Horace was a member of Traveler’s Rest Missionary Baptist Church where he attended faithfully.  After his health began to fail, Horace attended Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church under watch care.

Horace had many talents and interests.  He dabbled in photography where he especially liked to photograph the beautiful oceanic and mountain scenes of California.  Horace loved to cook; some of his specialties were chili, rum cake and bar-b-que on the grill.  He collected guns and knives and was an avid fisherman.

On July 5, 1996 Horace married for the second time to Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Drake.  The couple had no children together, but he remained a step-father to her sons, Kyle Irvin and Kelvin Drake until his death.

Horace transitioned from this earthly life on March 15, 2022 at home after a lengthy battle with cancer.  His daughter, Angela and granddaughter, Jaylin faithfully attended to his healthcare.

Horace leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Cindy; four children, two step-sons, twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Stephanie Ealy and his lifelong best friend, Robert Peters.

No services will be held.  Cremation services entrusted to Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East.
