Hjordis Jorgensen Hunt passed on September 19, 2022 in Pleasanton, CA at the age of 89. Hjordis was born in Lyngseidet, Norway on August 25, 1933. She was the third daughter born to Johanna Eriksen Jorgensen and Sigurd Waldmar Jorgensen in Kjosen, a village located within the Arctic Circle, on a fjord in Norway. She enjoyed her childhood in a rural and mountainous region where cross country skiing to school was the norm. When she was in her early 20’s, she ventured from Norway to England to attend a finishing school and became employed as a governess for a prominent American family based in London. She traveled with the family upon their return to the United States and lived with them in New York. In 1959 Hjordis traveled to visit with Norwegian friends who lived in Indianapolis and met the love of her life, Albert Lowrie Hunt, Jr. at a lakeside Independence Day party. They married on March 12, 1960 at Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, in Indianapolis where they lived for 35 years.
Hjordis kept a pristine home for her family and was a selfless, giving wife and mother who constantly put her family’s needs above her own. She was delighted to become the grandmother of ten grandchildren whom she showered with her love and kindness. She was well known for being a gracious hostess for both family and friends and was an exceptional baker who treated all to her special blotkake birthday cakes, Norwegian Christmas cookies and many other delicious baked goods. Additionally, she had a career in retail sales, working primarily at L.S. Ayres and Lazarus department stores in Indianapolis. After she and Al retired, they moved to Flat Rock, NC. During retirement they enjoyed traveling, walking, hiking, and visiting family often. They were devout Presbyterians who rarely missed weekly services and actively volunteered in their church congregations, both in Indianapolis and in Hendersonville, NC. Many of their lifelong friends came from their church families.
Hjordis is survived by her three daughters, Sonja Hunt DiMatteo (Jerry), Linda Hunt Pentaleri, and Nancy Hunt Wigginton (Steve) and her ten grandchildren, Jordan Camille Pentaleri, Jack Albert DiMatteo, Curtis Steven Wigginton, Isabel Lucille Pentaleri, Dylan Vincent DiMatteo, Maxwell Alan Wigginton, John Conrad Pentaleri, Jason Craig Wigginton, Aiden Joseph Pentaleri, and Camille Megan Wigginton. She is predeceased by her husband, Albert Lowrie Hunt, Jr.; her parents; her sisters, Sonja Frostad and Ester Christenson and her brother, Sigmund Jorgensen.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 11:00 am at the chapel at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd West Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46228 with internment thereafter next to her loving husband.
Her family cannot extend enough gratitude to Hjordis’ caregivers at Sunol Creek Memory Care in Pleasanton, CA. The love, patience and care they showed her for the past four years was heroic and immeasurably appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimers Association.
