Herb was born in Indianapolis to Carl and Anna Schwomeyer April 28, 1918 and died March 11, 2011. He was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis. He went to Emmaus Lutheran Elementary, Manual High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Butler University. He later earned a Doctorate at Indiana University. He began his career in education at Carmel High School as a teacher and coach. From 1945 to 1983 he was associated with Butler University as a teacher, athletic coach, advisor, field representative for Admissions, Dean of Men and Director of Athletic Promotion.
While at Manual, Herb was the president of the Senior class, played basketball and later received the Manual Alumnus of the Year and the Athletic Alumnus of the Year Awards. At Butler he played and coached for Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle later receiving the Butler Medal, the Bulldog of the Year Award, the Special Service Award and was elected to the Alumni Board of Directors.
Herb worked as an official for both football and basketball for the I.H.S.A.A. and officiated the State Basketball Tournament Finals in 1955 and 1956. He was the President of the Indiana Officials Association and assisted in the IHSAA Tournament telecasts on Channel 6.
He is a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, a “Sagamore of the Wabash”, a Director of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and served on the Speakers Bureau for the Indianapolis Indians baseball team. He is the author of Hoosier Hysteria and Hoosier Hersteria (History of Indiana High School Boys and Girls Single Class Basketball).
He is preceded in death by his wife Freda Marvel Schwomeyer. Herb is survived by his daughters, Sandy (Randy) Lamb; Judy Sladky and her husband Blake Norton; two grandchildren, Shannon Lamb and Brad (Karri) Lamb, two great grandchildren, Kyleigh and Madisyn and a sister, Helen (Monte) O’Connor.
Calling will be Monday March 14, 2011 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Hinkle Fieldhouse 510 W. 49th Street Indianapolis, IN 46208. Service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday March 15, 2011 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church 10202 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46290 with calling hour prior. Entombment will be in Washington Park North Cemetery.
