Henry Nangle, of Westfield, IN, formerly of Paducah, passed away on April 28, 2016. Born in Paducah on March 10, 1918, to Henry Joseph and Delia (Mularky) Nangle, he attended St. Mary Academy, graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville, KY, and attended Paducah Junior College (now Paducah Community College). During WWII, Henry served in the Army Air Corps, a forerunner to the US Air Force. He was a bombardier on a B-17 bomber in the European theatre. Henry was stationed in England and flew 23 missions over Germany and Eastern Europe as a member of the 100th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, often referred to as the "Bloody 100th", due to their many casualties. Henry received the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters as well as the Bronze Star in recognition of his service. After the war, he returned to Paducah and in August of 1947 and married Mary Margaret Mudd of Owensboro, KY. He was employed for over 40 years as a machinist at the Illinois Central Railroad in Paducah. He was an active member of St Thomas More Catholic Church in Paducah where he served on the parish council. Henry and Mary Margaret also lived in Nashville, TN, for several years and moved to Carmel, IN in 2005 to be near their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Margaret, son, Henry Thomas Nangle, and his sisters, Sr. Katherine Maria, SCN, and Nellie Nangle Roof. He is survived by his daughter Catherine (Gene) Kroeff, his granddaughter, Margaret Elaine Kroeff and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Wellbrooke of Westfield for the wonderful care they gave Henry over the past two and a half years. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made by a donation in Henry's name to St. Xavier High School, Office of Advancement, 1609 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, KY 40217.
Henry was a wonderful husband and father and a devoted friend to all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Blandville Road, Paducah, KY, at 11:00 am Friday, May 6, 2016. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 9:00 am.
