Helene G. Augsburger, 97, passed away in June 2026 after a long illness.
Born March 20, 1929, near Eisenach, Germany, in a village that later lay along the East–West German border, she was among the last surviving members of her family from that region.
In her twenties, she met her husband, Walter S. Augsburger, in Wrocław, Poland. They married on April 10, 1950. In 1958, they immigrated to the United States with their two young children after being sponsored by Walter’s parents. Helene became a U.S. citizen five years later.
Helene worked for Western Electric and, in the early 1960s, at Bell Labs, where she contributed to assembling some of the earliest integrated circuits and worked on an early videophone prototype. She was also a devoted homemaker who enjoyed gardening, sewing, and knitting.
Deeply connected to her German and Polish heritage, she remained active in cultural communities and was known for her traditional cooking, passing her love of food and culture to her family.
She is survived by her children, Richard Augsburger (Mary A. Bonke) of Northern Virginia and Urszula Schierenberg (Paul) of Indianapolis; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her resilience, dedication to family, and preservation of her heritage.
A visitation will be held in Helene's honor 9-11am Wednesday June 17th, 2026, the service will follow at 11am, all to take place at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church-335 S. Meridian Street, Greenwood, IN 46143. She will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery.
