Helen Starost Speicher, 98, passed away February 13, 2013 in Wayland, MA. She was born in Claremont, NH on September 8, 1914 and resided in Indianapolis for most of her life. Helen was the daughter of the late John and Anne (Steigvillo) Starost and the sister of the late Lillian Starost. She was the devoted and loving wife of William S. Speicher, who preceded her in passing.
Helen was a graduate of Butler University and had Masters' Degrees from both Butler University and the Juilliard School of Music. She was very active in music and art circles in Indianapolis for over 60 years. She was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority and she endowed several music scholarships at Butler University. Helen retired from the Indianapolis Public Schools, where she enjoyed teaching music and art. She was a former president of the Women's Department Club and chaired their musical scholarship program since 1976. Helen was an active member of Central Christian Church for many years.
Helen was a beloved mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Anne, son-in law, Dan Soper, and her grandchildren, Thomas, Mark, Elise, Elizabeth, Matthew, Marianna, and Tatiana Soper.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Central Christian Church, 701 North Delaware Street. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2013, at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue. Memorial contributions may be directed to the music department scholarship fund at Butler University.
