Helen Mccammack

November 8, 1929 — March 6, 2015

Helen L. McCammack, 85, passed peacefully on March 6, 2015. Born November 8, 1929 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of Walter and Deeter Orrell. She married James Wilfred McCammack on June 20, 1947, and he preceded her in death February 29, 2004. Helen spent her early life in Greencastle and rural Owen County, moving with her family in 1963 to her residence of 51 years near West Newton. She was a member of Bridgeport Central Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and also worked in retail, a factory and in the Valley Mills Junior High School cafeteria. She was fascinated with the British, especially Downton Abbey and Judi Dench. She was generous, curious, and thoughtful; many people received one of her hand-crocheted afghans or cards and letters through the years. In conversation, she would ask about others rather than talk about herself. Until recently she would spend hours reading the Indianapolis Star and working the crossword puzzle. She enjoyed simple pleasures of old movies (especially Gone With the Wind), coloring books, and hidden-picture books. She is survived by her children James M. (wife, Marilyn), Robert A., and Joseph A. McCammack. Grandchildren: Shelley Chisham, Dereck and Brian (wife, Laura) McCammack. Services will be Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Decatur Township, with visitation there Tuesday, March 10, 4-8 p.m. She will be laid to rest at Cloverdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to WFYI, the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project. Share a story or memory with the family on our guestbook page.
