Helen Elizabeth Smith 90 of Indianapolis passed away Saturday April 30, 2011. She was born in Rochester, IN to Walter and Elizabeth McDougle. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husbands Dr. Joseph Crockett Manning Jr. (1954) and Reverend Dr. William Martin Smith (1986) and her sister Mary Jennens (2010). She is survived by her children Jana S. Whinrey, Stephen A. Smith (Tatiana), Joseph C. Smith (Jenny), Martha J. Bessert, Carol L. Wakefield (Steve) and Gregory W. Smith (Theresa). She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and two sisters Jean Garber and Kathleen Downs (Dick). Helen graduated from Methodist School of Nursing in 1942. She was a surgical nurse for Methodist as well as private duty nurse until retiring in 1947 when she started her family. She was very active in The Disciples of Christ Church, her community, the work of her husbands and her children’s lives. She will always be remembered for her strong faith, positive attitude, generosity and hospitality, her great sense of humor and her quiet wisdom. Her greatest joy was her family. Calling will be held on Tuesday May 10, 2011 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center Washington Park North 2706 Kessler Blvd West Drive Indianapolis, IN 46228 from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday May 11, 2011 at 7th and 8th Christian Church 2916 West 30th Street Indianapolis, IN 46222 at 10 AM. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pension Fund of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ 130 East Washington Street Indianapolis, IN 46204.
