Hazel Jean Caperton of Indianapolis, 90, passed away April 8, 2023. She was born April 21, 1932, in Tuckerman, Arkansas to Reuben and Lola (Hutchinson) Harvey. She was married 70 years to the love of her life O. L. Caperton, Jr.
Mom enjoyed being with her family and working. She retired from RCA (Records) after 23 years of service. During her healthy years, she was active in her home church, Souls Harbor, helping with church cleaning, organizing, helping with bereavement meals, welcoming newcomers, and making calls to those she missed seeing in church. She was referred to by Pastor Duke as the “Mother of the Church.”
Mom loved her family. She comforted us in our time of need – “our shoulder to cry on.” Her door was always open, not just to family, but to anyone who just wanted to talk. She knew no stranger. We love her so much. She will be greatly missed.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband O. L. Caperton, Jr., her daughter Connie Lynn North, and brother Tommy Harvey.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her children Vickie (Melvin) Sims, Debbie (Jeff) Dillon, Timmie (Tammy) Caperton, and Matthew (Kelsay) Allen; brothers Bobby (Chris) Harvey and J. Q. Harvey; her sister Sherry Harvey; grandchildren Michonne, Shaelyn, Tabitha, Nathan, Daesha, Shasteen, and Douglas; 18 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be 12 – 1 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park at 425 N. Holt Road in Indianapolis, with funeral beginning at 1 p.m. Entombment will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.
