Harold Smith

Smith, Harold "Ike" W. Harold (Ike) Wesley Smith, 85, Carmel, departed this life December 19, 2010. He was born July 27, 1925 in Portland Indiana to Wilbur Lea Smith and Juanita Lois (Smith) Smith Mangas. He graduated from Portland High School in 1943. Ike was an outstanding athlete lettering in basketball for his beloved Portland Panthers. He proudly served his country during WW II as a Waist Gunner for the Army Air Corp. He served in the European Theatre and flew bombing missions with his squadron from England to Germany on a B17 before being shot down over England. Upon returning to the States on the Queen Elizabeth II, Ike continued his service to our country with the Special Service Forces fighting forest fires in California, Oregon, and Washington State. On July 30th, 1960, he married Phyllis (DeDe) Jean Moyer Wagner, his best friend and wife for over 50 years. She preceded him in death. Ike was a Senior Account Executive for the Sunshine Biscuit Company for 32 years, retiring in 1987. He earned many sales awards including Great Lakes Area Salesperson of the Year, Columbus Region for 1979. He had the achievement of bringing the Sunshine Biscuit label to Marsh Supermarkets and Village Pantry(s). His loves included Big Band music, fishing, and IU Basketball. Ike was a Third Degree Master Mason, a member of The Elks Lodge #768, and the American Legion Post #34. He is survived by his daughter, Wesley Dion (Smith) Doyle, son-in-law, John T. Doyle, Jr., and two grandchildren, Sarah Wesley Frazier and John Thomas Doyle III. Ike was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Wilbur Lea Smith, Jr. and granddaughter Rachael Wesley Doyle. Cremation will be handled through Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers. There will be a luncheon and celebration of Ike’s extraordinary life on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. at The Mansion at Oak Hill in Carmel Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Hamilton County, your local animal shelter, or St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis, Indiana.
