Harold Besse

December 30, 1899 — July 23, 2012

Harold Francis Besse, 79, of Indianapolis, IN, died Monday, July 23 2012, in Tunica, Mississippi. Harold was born June 23, 1933 in Macon, Missouri to Burrl Francis and Deloras (Roebuck) Besse. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School, attended Butler University and served in the United States Army in Korea. Harold held numerous track records through High School and as part of his military service he represented the Army in Japan as a track participant. He continued to enjoy sports throughout his life supporting Chatard Football (may have been their biggest fan from 1970 – 2012) as well as coaching youth sports. He was known to be at every sporting event of his children and grandchildren and kept meticulous records of their achievements. After years of employment, Harold retired from the Marion County Board of Health in 1999, but continued to work part time several days a week. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ruth Evelyn (Wright) Besse; his father, Burrl Francis Besse; mother, Deloras (Roebuck) Besse; as well as his sisters, Donna (Besse) Edwards and Sue (Thomas) Lewis. He is survived by his children; Terry Besse Hilton, Dean Allen (Kathy) Besse and Donna Kay (Keith) McHatton; grandchildren, Matt Steven (Katie) Hilton, Jonathan "Luke" Hilton, Garrett Roebuck Besse, and Rowan Miller Evelyn Besse; and sisters, Carol (Jerry) Powers, Sharon (John) Sealy & Cheryl (Augie) Gonzalez. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
