Harold J. Apple, Sr., Feb. 27, 1924, Mishawaka - 91, Passed away June 16, 2015 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center with his family at his side. Harold was born in Piqua, Ohio, to the late Chester Cleophus Apple of Dallas, Texas and Velma Mae Parker (VanDeGrift) of Indianapolis. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was an Assistant VP of Zales Jewelers. Harold was president of the Irvington Business Association and one of the creators that allowed children to paint on the windows of the local businesses during Halloween--a tradition that is still practiced today during the annual Historic Irvington Halloween Festival. During the 1960's, he was involved in the politics of the MSD of Warren Township Schools in Indianapolis which eventually created the Warren Township School Board. Harold was a former member of Christian Park Reformed Church and the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He also owned Colonial Pet Stores in Indianapolis form 1970-1991. In his later years, Harold spent much of his time searching for his shipmates and organized an annual gathering for them starting in 1995. Most importantly, Harold wrote and published a book for his friends and family members called "Reflection at Sea". Survivors of Harold include his wife of 71 years, Betty Jean (Cox) Apple of Mishawaka, and two sisters, Betty Bostic (Ocean Grove, NJ) and Jane Blauvelt (Port Richie, FL). Harold has four children, Harold (Susan) Apple Jr., and Roger (Patricia) Apple of Indianapolis, Marcia (Richard) Rancourt of South Bend, and Zalene Stinson of Greenwood. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Private services will be held. Arrangements entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple.
