Dr. H. Lane Ferree

Harry Lane Ferree, M.D., of Indianapolis, died February 17, 2026 at home. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Ferree was born May 21, 1937, in Indianapolis. He was the son of the late Edwin H. Ferree and Helen Schaumleffel Ferree and the brother of the late Thomas H. Ferree. He was a graduate of Shortridge High School, Wabash College, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and of the Indiana University School of Medicine. He served as an intern at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, and then as a psychiatry resident at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He married the former Mary Mericle in 1968.

He subsequently began active duty with the U. S. Army and served as a staff psychiatrist at the Triple Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, for three years, leaving with the rank of Major. He was certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1970. He returned to Indianapolis, where he and Mary had an office practice of psychiatry until 1997. He then served as a consultant for the Military Entrance Processing Station at Fort Harrison and for the Marion County Criminal Courts until 2007.

He was a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the Indianapolis Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the Indiana Psychiatric Society, where he served in several official positions.

Dr. Ferree’s interests included gardening, reading, genealogy, and serving as a supernumerary for the Indianapolis Opera. He and Mary also traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as the Caribbean, the Galapagos Islands, Europe, and China.

Dr. Ferree is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Mericle) Ferree, M.D.; daughters, Marjorie Ferree (Henry R.) Jones, and Cathryn C. Ferree (James R. Bork); son, Joel M. (Jessica B.) Ferree; and grandsons, Samuel I. Jones, William M. Jones, M.D. (Paige Johnson), and Rowan B. Ferree.

There will be no services. Interment will be private in Crown Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Audubon Society of Indiana, Wabash College, or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
