Gordon A. Watson

November 11, 1960 — November 9, 2021

Indianapolis, IN

Dr. Gordon A. Watson, 60, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on November 9, 2021.  Gordon was born in Lincoln Park, Michigan on November 11, 1960. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry and went on to obtain his Medical Degree and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed a postdoctoral Internal Medicine residency at The University of North Carolina followed by a residency in Radiation Oncology at The University of Michigan. Dr. Watson spent time at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine, and Intermountain Radiosurgery and Oncology Center before ultimately joining Indiana University Health where, in 2016, he was named Vice Chairman and Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Watson was known for his passion in providing care to his patients and for advancing his specialty in medicine.  He was beloved by his patients and colleagues that saw him as approachable, knowledgeable, and supportive.  He was quick to share his insight, encouragement, or his lacerating wit.  Dr. Watson was competitive and meticulous by nature, attributes that carried into his free time activities that included cycling, music, skiing, golfing, and being a self-proclaimed award winning chef.  He artfully navigated his alumni connections to rival universities by “wearing the apparel of the team that won the last game”.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl & Joan Watson.  He is survived by his partner of 7 years, Patty Morton, his three children Alexa, Megan, and Drew as well as his siblings Gregory Watson (Jean), Wendy Vacek (Thomas), and Christopher Watson. He had numerous nieces & nephews.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, December 4th at Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Ave, Indianapolis at 4pm.  Following the service there will be a continued time for greeting family.

Donations can be made in Dr. Watson’s memory to the Pink Ribbon Connection (http:pinkribbonconnection.org) or Indiana University Gordon Watson MD PhD, Fund of Hope to support research and education in the Department of Radiation Oncology.  https://cancer.iu.edu/gordon-watson-fund/
