Gladysmae Good, daughter of Norman and Gladys Cissna was born in Huntingburg, Indiana in 1922 but lived in Indianapolis most of her life. She died in Houston, Texas on February 5, 2015 at the age of 92. Gladysmae, blessed with both great intelligence and fierce determination, had a lifetime of achievements and an undying love of teaching. She graduated with honors from Shortridge High School in 1940. As the lead violinist she was the Concert Mistress of the high school orchestra. In 1962 she graduated from Butler University where she majored in Chemistry and graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She also studied at Louisiana State University. After serving as a chemist at Mallory's, she received her credentials as a public school teacher and upon completing her Masters degree in chemistry at Butler University, she taught Chemistry at Arlington High School from 1964 until her retirement in 1990 and IUPUI for 12 years, and taught 5 summers of Radioisotopes Technique at Butler University. As a teacher she was widely known and honored for her dedication and creativity, teaching both basic and advanced chemistry with an emphasis upon an experimental approach, engaging the students in laboratory experiments and inspiring many future chemists, doctors, nurses and engineers with her contagious enthusiasm. In addition to her classroom work, she also provided extraordinary leadership for the Arlington Quiz Team and was Student Council sponsor. As a teacher and a parent, she was active in the American Field Service program, offering hospitality in her home to exchange students from Switzerland, Costa Rica, Colombia, Germany, Thailand, Portugal and Denmark, students who became a part of her much-cherished extended family. In recognition of her proficiency and enormous dedication as a teacher, she was honored with the 1980 and 1989 American Chemical Society Central Regional Award in High School chemistry Teaching, The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1988, The Indiana Teacher of The Year award in 1988, and the Butler University Alumni Association Alumni Achievement Award in 1992. She had summer study fellowships at DuPont, Berkeley and Princeton where she participated in the development of teaching standards and took part in science teacher exchanges with Moscow and Thailand. She was a member of the American Chemical Society (president Indianapolis chapter 1986), the Hoosier Association of Science teachers, Inc (HASTI), International Conference for Chemical Education (ICCE) and the American Association of University Women. In 1942 she married Maj. Edward A. Good of Leesburg, Indiana. They met through the Epworth League while playing shuffleboard at Central Avenue United Methodist Church, the much beloved church in which she was baptized and raised, and the church in which they were married and together provided outstanding volunteer leadership. For many years, Gladysmae Good served in the Women's Society and Official Board of the church. They were married for 64+ years and raised 4 children, Sharon A. Lyons (Tom) of Allardt, Tennessee , David W. Good (Corinne) of Lyme, Connecticut, Linda K. Gettings (Michael) of Bluffton, South Carolina and Edward F. Good (Joy) of Houston, Texas. Her Grandchildren and great grandchildren include Christine Berger, Catherine Schlebecker, Logan Good, Gregory Gettings, Anna Good, Maggie Schlebecker, Abigail Schlebecker, Hayden Schlebecker and Paris Berger. Her resilient and indomitable spirit was evident throughout her life, and her family remembers her extraordinary love and devotion to her family. As an avid camper and traveler, she and her family traveled widely through North and South America, Europe, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece as well as visiting her extended family in Portugal, Thailand, Switzerland, and England. In her adventuresome spirit, she instilled in her children an appreciation for different cultures and a love for exploration. In 1994 Gladysmae and Edward relocated to Sun City West, Arizona where they joined Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church. Active in the women's fellowship and both the Mission Outreach and Christian Education committees, Gladysmae wrote several plays, helping to bring to life biblical stories and personalities to show their relevance for today. In 2007 upon the death of Edward Good, Gladysmae relocated to Bluffton South Carolina where her family was most grateful to her daughter, Linda Gettings for her love and extraordinary care. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana with visitation from 10 -11 AM and service at 11:00 AM.
