Gladys L. Carter was born on May 10, 1933 in DeSoto Parrish, Louisiana. She was raised by her Great-aunt and uncle, Bethina Latin and Roosevelt Johnson. Hunter Latin was her grandfather and Nora Hines Johnson was her grandmother. She met the love of her life Robert Carter during their school days at Desota High School. He eventually swept her off her feet and they would marry in March of 1952. Gladys and Robert had three children. Helen Marie Carter was the first of their three children. Helen Marie would precede her mother in the afterlife in the year of 2008. Robert Carter Jr. would be the next blessing that the matriarch of the Carter family would have. Gladys spent her younger years living in Louisiana until her and Robert decided to move to California. Along the way the decided to visit Indiana where she would become pregnant with their third child Wayne in the year of 1955. At that point the Carters decided to begin new roots in the state of Indiana and would remain in this state until she returned home to the Lord. In her many years of hard work, Gladys worked at Hooks downtown during the 1960s as a server. During her time working at Hooks, she also worked part-time for Dr. McCarthy and Bernice McCarthy as a help. Gladys would continue to remain loyal to the McCarthys until they preceded her in death. From there, Gladys would join the assembly line at RCA packaging records until they relocated the company to Mexico. From RCA, she would join the assembly line at General Devices. This would be the last transition for Gladys. She would retire from General Devices in 2000. Gladys was a member of Mount Paran Baptist Church. She enjoyed watching basketball. She loved to talk on the phone. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always there willing to give a helping hand, even if she didn’t care for you. She was always cooking; whether she enjoyed it or not, we will never know, but we thoroughly enjoyed her spaghetti, macaroni & cheese, fried catfish on Saturdays, and let’s not every forget about her homemade ice cream or her famous banana pudding. She made a point to make you your requested special birthday meal. And we can’t forget about walking into her home during Christmas time, seeing all the rice krispie treats, congo bars, ginger snacks, and chocolate chip cookies all over the kitchen counters. She always had a way of making those newcomers to her home feel at home, whether that was her asking them if they wanted a Pepsi or if they were hungry. We can finally let her secret out the bag.....she always cooked from a recipe. Now if we could only find those recipes. They may taste good but never as good as hers she always had the right touch of this or the right pinch of that. She will be missed dearly and will always be in our memories and forever in our hearts. We love you. She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted husband, Robert; two sons, Robert Jr. and Wayne. Grandchildren Kimberly Caban (Carter), Donya Caban, Rudy Caban, Alicia Henderson, Crystal Lewis-Tuttle, and Grace Hildebrand, a total of 9 great-grandkids, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
