Gladys Elma Thurman passed away peacefully October 23, 2016 at 7:59pm at Methodist Hospital. She is preceded in death by her 8 brothers and sisters, Eva, Loel, Chester, Welby, Floyd Jr., Kenneth, Eugene, and twin sister Alma, as well as her parents, Mae B. Bowlin and Floyd Smith Sr. Elma is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, John, her children Bill, Martha, and Alice, her daughter-in-law Janette, and son-in-law George, her grandchildren Barbara Ann, Christina, Stanley, Johnny, Robert, Zachary, and Mae, her 10 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. She was a member of the Eastern Star branch of the Masonic Lodge and a founding member of a popular CB Club.
In her life, Elma was a caring, honest, wise, bold, and direct person who would tell it like it is. Her dry wit, intelligence, and sense of humor never ceased to surprise those around her. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother who was always supportive and full of advice. She excelled at being a homemaker and no one could can vegetables, cook a meal, keep a spotless home, or iron a shirt better than she could. In her spare time, she enjoyed hunting for bargains at thrift stores and when she found a great deal it would really excite her. She will be remembered fondly by everyone who came in contact with her during her full life.
Friends and loved ones can come for the visitation from 5PM-9PM on Thursday October 27, 2016, with the hour of 4PM-5PM reserved for family. An Eastern Star service will also be held at 7PM, during the visitation, that will be open to the public. The funeral service will be held at 2PM on Friday October 28, 2016. Elma will be laid to rest at Floral Park Cemetery following the funeral service.
Both the visitation and service will be held at: Flanner and Buchanan at Floral Park
425 N Holt Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46222.
