Gilbert John Phillips, Jr. was born on April 20, 1948 in Sioux City, IA. He passed peacefully from the earth on August 24, 2014 in Indianapolis, IN. Gilbert is best remembered by his family and friends for his humor, kindness, and generosity. Gilbert became an Eagle Scout at age 16 and continued his dedication to service and community throughout his life. Gilbert was an educator at heart and believed deeply in the importance of learning and appreciation of the written word. He taught middle and high school English and Language Arts throughout his 30-year teaching career in Jefferson, WI and Kokomo, IN. When he wasn't coaching wrestling or football after school, he enjoyed playing keyboards in local blues and rock bands. Gilbert was a long-time member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Carmel, IN and happily served the congregation and community in many ways, most notably through his fantastic cooking. An avid reader and music- lover, Gilbert strived to appreciate the beauty in the world and ease the suffering of others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Mary Phillips, and his brother, David. He is survived by his brother George, his children Ian and Alison, and his granddaughter Monroe. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 29th at 10:00am at St Peter's United Church of Christ. 3106 E Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN, 46033. All are welcome.
