Gilbert John Menchhofer Jr., 69, passed away on July 22nd, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on November 21, 1955, in the same city he called home throughout his life, Gil leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, and deep familial love.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Gil served his country with honor before embarking on a long and committed career with IndyGo. For 30 years, he contributed to the lifeblood of Indianapolis’s public transportation system, earning the respect of colleagues and passengers alike through his steadfast work ethic and reliability.
Gil was a man of many passions. He was an excellent billiards player whose skill at the table was matched only by his enthusiasm for the game. A devoted race fan, he found joy in the roar of engines and the thrill of competition. He also had a collector’s heart—gathering items that sparked his interest and reflected his unique personality.
Family was central to Gil’s life. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters: Tawnya Atwell (Tom), Trisha Atwell (Adam), Theresa Atwell (Brandon), and Tammera Menchhofer (Kevin). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Catawna Silvers, Caine Silvers, Coty Wilson, Christopher Padgett, Cheyenne Atwell, Chyala Atwell, Cierra Atwell, Carma Gorman, Caterra Lindsey, chalei Seal and Ceagan Lindsey. He also leaves behind his great-granddaughters Juniper Diddock, Jillian Wilson and great grandson Jackson Wilson. As well as beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gil was preceded in death by his father Gilbert Menchhofer Sr., his mother Bessie Menchhofer, and his brother Delano McCarty.
Those who knew Gil will remember him as someone who lived life on his own terms—steadfast in service to others and rich in character. His presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
We will remember you forever and miss you every day.
