Mrs. Gertrude Elizabeth "Trudy" Standish (nee Eberle) passed away at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at the age of 94. Mrs. Standish was a resident of Carrollton, Texas, at the time of her death, but had lived most of her life in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mrs. Standish is survived by her 2 daughters, Nancy (Standish) Bridgforth (husband George Bridgforth) of Carrollton, Texas, and Linda Sue Standish (husband David Lawrence Rowthorn) of Pepper Pike, Ohio. She is also survived by her 3 grand-daughters, Jennifer Bridgforth and Diana Bridgforth, both of Carrollton, Texas, and Natalie Standish Rowthorn of Pepper Pike, Ohio.
Mrs. Standish is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Samuel Miles Standish, who passed away September 21, 2003, in Indianapolis, Indiana and by her parents, Frank Henry Eberle and Caroline Helene Eberle (nee Nielsen) of Edison, New Jersey. She is also preceded in death by her sister Caroline Johannah (Eberle) Schreiner of Tom's River, New Jersey, and by her brothers Gabriel Henry Eberle of Hialeah, Florida, and Martin William Eberle of Sacramento, California.
Mrs. Standish was born on July 24, 1920, in South Amboy, New Jersey. She graduated from Seton Hall College at Newark, New Jersey, and Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing in 1941. After graduation she worked as a private-duty registered nurse. On March 28, 1945, she began her first commission with the United States Navy with the rank and classification of Ensign – Nurse Corps in the 3rd Naval District. After her commission ended on May 1, 1947, Trudy worked as a nurse at the Middlesex General Hospital in New Jersey. In 1948 she worked for E.R. Squibb & Sons, in Long Island City, New York, as an industrial nurse. She also held the rank of Lt. (g.) – Nurse Corps in the Volunteer United States Naval Reserve.
On August 6, 1949, Trudy married Dr. Samuel Miles Standish at the New Brunswick Presbyterian Church in New Jersey, having met him while he served as a dentist in the United States Navy. They began their life together in Muncie, Indiana, where Dr. Standish was employed as a dentist and Trudy became a homemaker. They later moved to Indianapolis.
Mrs. Standish was a member of the American Nurses' Association through the New Jersey State Nurses Association and the Alumnae Association of Jersey City Hospital School of Nursing. While her husband was on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, Mrs. Standish was active in the Indiana University School of Dentistry Faculty Wives Club. They attended Northminster Presbyterian Church on Kessler Boulevard.
Mrs. Standish will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Washington Park North Mausoleum, 2706 Kessler Boulevard West, Indianapolis, Indiana, in a private ceremony.
