George 'Sonny' Butler

December 20, 1940 — August 31, 2014

George "Sonny" Butler was born December 20, 1940 to the union of William and Katie Butler of Senatobia, Mississippi. Although George wasn't feeling his best he really wanted to attend his family reunion but as fate would have it George became ill but stayed with us until after returning home from our Nashville family reunion. It was there in his church's parking lot amongst family that he began to make his transition and as our family reunion clan surrounded him in prayer, little did we know there was already a place in heaven being prepared for him. George worked at Conrail Rail Road for 27 years leaving behind a bunch of well-loved buddies, and after his retirement he later worked at Walmart in the lawn and garden department for another ten years. George's favorite past time was watching sports on TV at home while talking on the phone during the entire game to his buddies. George was known as "Papa" to all of his many grandkids, and they enjoyed sitting on his lap in his favorite chair and drinking soda pop out of his glass. George loved him some Lena, and you would never see one without the other. George and Lena laughed together, prayed together, worshipped together, traveled together, went to every doctor's appointment together, and when the Lord called George home they were together. George knew his time was nearing and he told Lena I love you, and you are going to be alright. George also enjoyed talking to his only surviving sibling of eight, Lillian Brown – Memphis, TN. His deceased siblings include; William, Joe-Raymond, Polly, Willie-Fannie, Meryle, and Mattie. George took Lena as his bride on May 20, 1978, and there never was a dull moment in their blissful 37 years of marriage. Through thick and thin and better or worse George and Lena celebrated life together, and George never left her side. George leaves to cherish his memory his loving and supportive wife Lena Butler and their children, Arnita Butler – Indianapolis, IN, Kelvin Butler – Erie, PA, Monika Appleton – Indianapolis, IN, Patrick Appleton (Katrina) – Carmel, IN, Anthony Appleton – Schererville, IN, Cynthia Johnson (Michael) - Clarkston, MI, Valerie Appleton – Atlanta, GA, and Keith Butler and Marvin Butler (both deceased). George also has twenty-six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. George and Lena were faithful members of Purpose of Life Ministries.
