George Erwin Ludwig, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away at home on January 22 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Barbara; his children Richard (Gloria) Ludwig of Des Plaines, IL; Nancy Ludwig (Robert Wolsfelt) of Boston, MA; daughter-in-law Carol Herman of Carmel, IN; and Barbara’s children Cyndi Hall, Brad (Terri) Camp, Mike (Patty) Camp, and Jeff (Wende) Camp. He was a loving grandfather to Alexandria and Samantha Ludwig, Hanna and Rachel Wolsfelt, and Barbara’s 11 grandchildren (Ariadne, Gabriel, Natalie, Ryan, Steven, David, Katie, Ben, Kiersten, Kayla and Stephen) as well as 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Marilyn Griffith of Bellamy, AL and Helen Lovisa of Riverside, IL and nieces and nephews George, Susan, Helen, Julia, Willie and Mario.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 36 years Ruth Sokol Ludwig and son George Scott Ludwig.
Born to George H. and Clara (Ulbrich) Ludwig in Chicago on June 6, 1923, he was a graduate of Lyons Township High School in 1941, was a Purple Heart recipient as Sergeant with Company L406 Infantry in the European Theater, and received a B. A. from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1948. As a Certified Public Accountant, he worked for Ernst and Young in Chicago and Indianapolis, and as a partner with Whipple and Co. until his retirement in 1988. He was active in the Indiana CPA Society where he served as Board President and Peer Reviewer and received the Distinguished Service Award.
During his 40 years on the Indiana Health Foundation Board, he served as president and received the 2004 Sagamore of the Wabash Award for his loyal service. He also was a member of the Indianapolis Rotary Club (Board); Nantucket Bay Homeowners Association (President); and VFW Member. An avid golfer, George was a member of the Western Seniors Golf Association (Board of Directors) and 45-year member of Hillcrest Country Club (Board and President) where he could often be seen dancing on the patio with a long line of ladies eagerly awaiting their turn.
George would light up every room he entered with his jokes and limericks, appropriate for every occasion. George loved to laugh with his fellow man, rich or poor, humble or famous. He bore no grudge and easily loved. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends may gather for calling on January 26, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center - Broad Ripple, where Funeral Services will be 11a.m. Thursday, January 27. Burial will follow in Washington Park North Cemetery.
