Gene Arthur Coleman

August 18, 1936 — December 7, 2025

Indianapolis

Gene Arthur Coleman, 89, of Lawrence, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, with his wife, Cathy, by his side.

Born August 18, 1936, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gene was raised in Roswell, New Mexico. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1968, then settled in Lawrence, Indiana, where he lived for more than 50 years. Following his military service, Gene worked as a civil servant with the Department of Defense Finance and Accounting Service until his retirement.

Gene was a Freemason, a member of Penta Alpha Lodge No. 564, and later a member of Oakland Lodge No. 140. He was also a Murat Shriner, loyally contributing to the charitable missions of both organizations. A lifelong bowler, he participated annually in the United States Bowling Congress and was inducted into the Indiana USBC Hall of Fame in 1995. Gene also served several terms as Secretary for The National Bowling Association (TNBA), which he did enthusiastically. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and golfing, and his secret talent was singing karaoke, often surprising listeners with his beautiful voice.

In his later years, Gene’s faith became central to his life. He often said his greatest gift from his wife, Cathy, was her encouragement that led him to salvation and to living according to the Gospel, which guided his service to others.

Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Georganna Ethel (Irish) Coleman, his sister, Earlene Quigley; his first wife, Addine Faye Rhodes; his second wife, Kimie Asatomi Coleman; and his stepson, Michael Schupay (2008), husband of Susan Schupay.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Joanne Graham-Coleman; his children and stepchildren, Victor Schupay (Meredith), Joann Schupay, Deborah Andrychuk (James), Stephanie Toole (Curtis), and William Coleman (Susiana Teddy); his grandchildren, Corbin, Craig, Connor, Christian, Haley, Mackenzie, Allison, Brandi, Tyler, and Olivia; and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chaddock School for Boys, Quincy, Illinois.
