Gary Irl Todd was born May 8, 1937 in Walla Walla, WA and passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026 in Forest, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Irl and Ruby Alice (Waddington) Todd, and his brother, Robert Lynn Todd.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Linda May Todd; sister Nancy LeEtta Bayne (Duane); children Teresa Renee Maass, Gary Irl Todd, Jr. (Dorothy), Scott Robert Todd (Karen); grandchildren Kyle Christopher Maass, Kevin Todd Maass (Samantha), Kelsey Elizabeth Rowland (Rex), Gary Irl (TJ) Todd III (Alyssa), William Thomas Todd (Cheyenne), Amanda Michelle Todd, Alexander Scott Todd (Caroline); and 7 great-grandchildren with one additional great-grandchild expected soon.
Gary was a Navy veteran who served as a journalist and photographer for four years in multiple locations including the Naval Air Station near Phoenix, AZ where he met Linda, ‘the love of my life.’ His love for broadcasting began when doing radio shows for his high school. He built his career at stations in Washington, California, Arizona, Canada, Colorado, and Oregon before settling in Indianapolis where he hosted the top-rated “Gary's Place" morning show from 1968-1988 on 1070AM WIBC. Highlights of his time at WIBC include the Great Race trip around the world promotion, reporting live from Cape Kennedy at the launch of Apollo 11, and broadcasting live before Indiana Pacers home games and at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during Indy 500 practice and qualifications throughout the month of May.
He was the recipient of numerous community service awards including the Distinguished Service Award by the Speedway Jaycees, the Indiana Jaycee’s Outstanding Young Hoosier Award, the CASPER Award by the Community Service Council of Metropolitan Indianapolis in recognition of the monthly Opportunity for Service program that featured Mayor Bill Hudnut taking listener calls on-air, and the Service to Mankind Award by the Castleton Sertoma Club. Gary’s involvement in local charities included being Radio Chairman for the Hemophilia Foundation, Radio Chairman for Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, Co-Captain of the Indiana University Foundation 150th anniversary campaign and Crusade Chairman of the American Cancer Society Campaign.
Gary was a man of faith who loved spending time with his family and sharing his love for the outdoors with them. He always strived to have a positive outlook on life, was an avid fisherman and golfer, and loved traveling.
A memorial mass for Gary will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at Holy Spirit Parish at Geist – 10350 Glaser Way, Fishers, In 46037. Visitation will be at the church at
10:00 a.m. and a private family graveside service will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation
