Gary Norman Leitz

September 8, 1939 — July 31, 2016

Gary Norman Leitz

76, of Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 at St. Vincents Hospital. He was born September 8, 1939 to Howard R. and Virginia E. Leitz.

He was a 1958 graduate of Broad Ripple High School. Gary was a member of St Luke's Methodist Church,Broad Ripple Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Cathedral, Murat Shrine, and an eight year veteran of the Indiana National Guard.

His father established Leitz Roofing Co., Inc. in 1952 and Gary began working for him in 1954. When his father passed, Gary continued the business until he sold it in 2014. In that same time frame during the 70's and 80's, he and his wife also designed and built custom homes. In 1990 they began to buy properties, redesign and rent them. He built his first house when he was twenty, buying thirty acres of land in Brown County, Indiana. He worked each night after work and on weekends to complete the 1 1/2 story cabin. The family always went to Brown County to play and relax…Gary worked.

Gary was the guy everyone liked. He knew what he was capable of and what he wasn't; he made no apologies for either. He was never envious of what he couldn't do, nor would he brag about what he accomplished. He was a truly humble man. His sense of humor was like a dry martini. He claimed to never argue, only discuss matters. He was never wrong, only misinformed.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jackie (Lynn) Leitz, daughter Lesley (Rodney) Fields and grandchildren, Tyler, Audrey and Colby Fields. He was truly a remarkable husband, father, and grandfather.

He was a survivor of a massive heart attack in 1998. He was was the ideal patient afterwards. In 2011 he was diagnosed with Plasmacytic Lymphoma. Our family can never thank Dr. Manges or the staff at St. Vincent's hospital enough for all their loving care and devotion to our precious Gary. We know he took the hand of God on Sunday and is now resting peacefully until we see him again.

Visitation will be Friday, August 5, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple. Services will be Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Noon at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple. The burial will take place at the Washington Park East Cemetery with a luncheon for friends and family following. www.flannerbuchanan.com
