Garry Ray Walton

June 29, 1959 — September 17, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Garry Ray Walton was born June 29, 1959, in Richmond, Indiana to Richard and Treva Walton.  He peacefully departed this life on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Garry grew up in Richmond, Indiana, and graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1977.  After high school, Garry attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he graduated from the Kelley School of Business in 1981.

Following 17 years at American States Insurance, Garry worked for 24 years at United Healthcare.  He was highly dedicated to his work and thoroughly enjoyed the relationships formed with his coworkers.  Garry also enjoyed giving back to the community through United Healthcare volunteer events at Gleaners Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity.

Garry had a big heart to help people and bring them together.  He donated many evenings to helping low-income individuals and the elderly to do their federal and state income taxes as part of the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program.  He also served as the neighborhood HOA President, Secretary, and Social Committee Lead.

Garry was very passionate about sports.  He was an avid Colts, Pacers, Indiana University, and Cincinnati Reds fan but most importantly he loved participating.  Garry was an IHSAA basketball official, a youth coach for baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball, volunteered for the Pan American Games, and played recreational softball, basketball, and golf.  He also had a passion for running, which led him to run the Chicago (1986) and New York (1990) Marathons as well as the Mini Marathon 13 times.

Faith was also an important part of Garry’s life.  He attended Saint Gabriel’s Church where he was a member of the Men’s Club and Finance Council.  He also served as an usher and Parish Council President.  He was a current member of Traders Point Christian Church.

Garry is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Anita Walton, his son Kyle (Lauren) Walton, his daughter Carrie (Luke) Stettler, one granddaughter, Everly Walton, and one grandson, Camden Walton.  He is also survived by his brother Michael (Denise) Walton.  Garry was preceded in death by his mother, Treva Walton (1992), his father, Richard Walton (2009), and his brother, Larry Walton (2023).  Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made in his name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

“I have fought the good fight.  I have finished the race.  I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

2 Timothy 4:7-8
