Garry M. Eckard, 92, of Carmel, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Garry was born August 12, 1930, in Huntington, WV to the late Garry and Olive Eckard. He was a graduate of Marshall University and received his MBA from the University of Michigan.
Garry was a self-employed consulting actuary and also was employed for many years as an actuary for John Hancock Life Insurance Company, Lincoln National Life Insurance, and American United Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. Garry served in the National Guard and in the Army Reserve. He also was a longtime member of King of Glory Lutheran Church of Carmel.
Garry was a talented musician. Prior to receiving his MBA and commencing his career as an actuary, he played trumpet professionally, touring with big bands led by Henry Busse and by Neal Hefti.
Garry had a great interest in genealogical research. He was a longtime member of the Sons of the American Revolution and of the Founders and Patriots of America, and he held the honorary titles of Sagamore of the Wabash and Kentucky Colonel. He was a Past President of the Indiana Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, April 27 at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 28 at King of Glory Lutheran Church.
Garry was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Lee; he is survived by his children, Garry G. (wife, Jeanne) Eckard, David C. Eckard, John L. Eckard, MD, James B. (wife, Suzie) Eckard, MD, and 7 grandchildren Jillian, Allison, Caroline, Maura, Amia, Tigh, and Holden.
