Garry Eugene Tackitt passed away on August 25, 2020 at home, surrounded by family following a brief hospitalization.
Garry was born in Franklin, Indiana on July 21, 1953 to Winston G. and Violet M. Tackitt.
He was a 1971 graduate of Mooresville HS and earned an Associate Degree in Machine Tool Technology from Ivy Tech. He served in the US Army, stationed in the US and Germany. He worked as a cutter grinder for VIP Tooling and later as a Journeyman machinist for Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis where he retired after 28 years.
He was a master craftsman and creative fixer of all things who never hesitated to lend a hand or a tool to anyone in need. He especially loved finish carpentry, cabinet and furniture making. He found great joy in helping others and sharing his knowledge. Recently one of his favorite projects was making wooden toys for children with Central Indiana Woodworkers.
Garry was an active participant in his near eastside community for more than 40 years. He served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Indianapolis Boy Scout Troup 1. He was a member and president of the Board of Directors for the Near Eastside Community Federal Credit Union. He volunteered for the Youth Job Preparedness Program at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Robert and Timothy, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Heeter) Tackitt, two children, Joshua (Cheyenne) and Rachael (Rob), two grandchildren, Emalynn and Elizabeth, brother Steve, and sister Debbie Haines.
Services will be held at Flanner Buchanan on 10722 East Washington Street on Friday August 28th. Visitation from 10-11am. Service starting at 11.
