G. Girard 'Jerry' Smith

G. Girard "Jerry" Smith, 87, long-time Hagerstown resident, passed away April 25, 2014. He was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Richmond, Ind., to Malcolm A. & Esther B. Smith. Jerry died in Indianapolis, where he had lived the past several years. Besides being an automotive engineer--he worked for Perfect Circle in Hagerstown, also Dana Corp. (from which he retired) both in Hagerstown & Richmond, Jerry was a professional trumpet player, performing in many bands over the years, primarily Jazz, but also in concert & band ensembles. Jerry was a Lifetime Member of the American Federation of Musicians, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He attended Indiana University, and also Earlham, before being drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines. As he was an accomplished musician, Jerry was asked to perform in the elite Army Show Band, performing for visiting dignitaries, including Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, at the end of the war. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Claire (Havron) Smith. Jerry is survived by wife Cosette (Craig) Smith; sons Malcolm D. and James B. Smith, daughters Shawn Lawrence & Toni Goodnight; brothers Jan and Tommy Smith; 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Flanner & Buchanan--Floral Park, 425 N. Holt Rd., Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. also at that location. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
