Florence Marie Hancock
Aug 30, 1926 – Sept 21, 2014
Florence Hancock, a very vigorous, lively, and strong woman, passed away suddenly on Sunday evening, September 21, 2014. She was the eighth of nine children, with only one sister, Sophia Staab, still surviving.
Florence was born in Hyacinth, Kansas to John and Agnes (Korbe) Fross and attended Hays State College.
She was married to Norman Glade Hancock on August 14, 1950 in Tucamcari, NM and was blessed to have one son, Gregory Glade Hancock, who is the choreographer and artistic director of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre (GHDT) in Carmel, IN. Ms. Hancock's devoted son remains committed to keeping her memory alive by starting the Florence Hancock Memorial Scholarship for aspiring young dancers. Florence always said that her happiest moments were watching her son's visions turned into reality in the theatre.
Florence had an incredible passion for the arts, especially dance, music, and theatre.
Her involvement in GHDT spanned the gamut from meticulous treasurer for the Board of Directors, to enthusiastic fan, to each dancers' 'adopted' mother. She adored travel and was able to see many glorious sites all around the world in over twenty nations. She also enjoyed her life at home where she was a talented gardener/landscaper and active in local culture and philanthropy.
She was an accomplished athlete, specializing in swimming, diving, and semi-pro softball. She went on to coach numerous women's softball teams. Through her involvement in athletics, arts and philanthropy, she touched and influenced countless lives.
Florence was currently working at St. Vincent's Hospital, where she had worked for 36 years in the Medical Records Department. She served as an officer in The Association of Office Professionals and became Quality Partner of the Year, a distinguished employee recognition. Her colleagues called her "the most recognized face of St. Vincent's" amongst all of her associates and the medical staff. Everyone knew and admired Florence Hancock for her work ethic, sense of humor, and warmth and regard toward every person she met, no matter what their state or status.
