Fitzhugh Lee Lyons, Sr.

Rev. Dr. Fitzhugh Lee Lyons, Sr., 86, passed away May 27, 2021 at 11:15am with his family by his side. He was born August 2, 1934 in Elkhart, Indiana to the late Henry and Daisy (Austin) Lyons. Dr. Lyons accepted Jesus Christ at the early age of seven years. In September, 1952, he accepted God’s call and became a licensed minister; being ordained in October 1960.

He graduated from the Elkhart High School; attended the Indiana Central College, Indianapolis, and the Central Baptist Biblical Theological Seminary, South Bend Extension.  His studies also included continuous courses in Chaplaincy from Butler University Theological Seminary and Pastoral Counseling from St. Francis College in Loretta, PA.  In April 1975 he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Inter-Baptist Theological Center, Houston, Texas.  He has also received a Doctor of Biblical Theology (DBTh) Degree from the Beulah Bible College and Seminary of Elkhart, Indiana and was a past member of the teaching staff.  An Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters was bestowed on Dr. Lyons in 2004 from Vincennes University.

His pastorates included Unity Baptist Church, Indianapolis, IN; Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Johnstown, PA.; and Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Indianapolis, IN. In January of 2019, after 38 years of faithful service, to the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, he retired from pastoring and was honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus.

Dr. Lyons was preceded in death by his son David Lee Lyons. He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife of fifty-nine years Mary Louise (Means); and their sons, Rev. Fitzhugh Jr., wife (Angela) and Pastor Mark, wife (Sarita) along with two grandsons and three granddaughters. Also, his two sisters Phyllis Davis, and Bonnie, husband (Roy) Clark and a host of nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be Friday, June 11, 2021, 12 to 7 p.m. at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Early visitation on Saturday, June 12, 2021, 9 to 11 a.m. with Homegoing Celebration beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.
