Evelyn Garvin McCabe
83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Wellfleet, Massachusetts, died May 7, 2013.
She was born November 2, 1929 in Vienna, Austria to Adolphus and Jane Garvin and spent her childhood summers in Jaremcze, Poland. She moved to England in 1938, and then to New York City in 1945, where she graduated from Julia Richman High School in 1946.
She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1950, where she met Aloysius B. McCabe, whom she married in 1951. She lived in Washington, DC from 1953 until she moved to Indianapolis in 1999. In Washington, she helped establish libraries in local public schools and served as Admissions Director at Beauvoir School…. She also volunteered at the Children's National Medical Center AIDS Unit.
Evelyn could do anything with her hands that involved cloth or yarn, designing and hand-sewing dozens of unique quilts that she gave to family and friends, raffled for charity, and occasionally displayed in galleries and art shows.
She was predeceased by her husband and her brother Stefan Garvin. She is survived by her brother Robert Garvin of Sarasota, Florida, her son Robert O. McCabe (Dorothy Caeser) of New York City and daughter Janet McCabe (Jon Laramore), and grandchildren David McCabe, Peter Laramore, Alice Laramore, and Daniel Sheehan.
There will be a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be directed to Children's National Medical Center, 111 Michigan Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20010 or Improving Kids' Environment, 1915 W. 18th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
