Evelyn Hicks

Evelyn M. Hicks, 82, Carmel, passed away June 1, 2015. She was born August 4, 1932, in Indianapolis, the daughter of the late William E. Svendsen and Opal (Oliver) Svendsen. She married William R. Hicks on February 14, 1953. Evelyn grew up in Springfield Ohio and was a graduate of Springfield High School. She then attended St. Vincent Nursing School in Indianapolis. She built, owned and operated Hicks Boarding Kennels (now Hickory Acres) and then worked at Tri-County Opportunity Schools in Noblesville Indiana. Evelyn was also a professional dog handler and the best fisherman of the family. She was preceded in passing by her husband of 62 years, William Hicks; survived by two sons, Geoffrey (Linda) Hicks and Tyler (Deborah) Hicks; four grandchildren, Nathaniel, Vanessa, Jessica, and Michaela; four great grandchildren, Owen, Ethan, Francesca, and Vincent; sister Edna Shieldcastle and brother William Svendsen. She was preceded in passing by sister Cheryl Svendsen. Services will be 3:00 pm, Monday June 8 at Flanner and Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite). Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Indiana Special Olympics or the Alzheimer's Association.
