Evadine Brooks

October 29, 1951 — June 13, 2025

Indianapolis, Indiana

Evadine (Auntie) Sloan, a beloved first-grade teacher at IPS #65 – Raymond Brandes for 34 years, passed away on June 13, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 73. Born on October 29, 1951, in Ladoga, Indiana, she dedicated her life to the education and nurturing of young minds, leaving an indelible mark on the countless students who had the privilege to learn under her guidance.

We celebrate the life and legacy of Evadine (Auntie) Sloan, a woman whose kindness and unwavering generosity shaped the lives of countless children. Her positive impact as a 1st Grade teacher for 34 years is immeasurable and the lessons she shared with her nieces and nephews will carry on for generations.

Auntie's passion for teaching was evident in the warmth and care with which she approached her classroom. Her commitment to fostering a love of learning and creating a supportive environment for her students will be forever cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Whether it was through dedication to education, her impassioned embroidered blanket making, or the selflessness to make sure every child feels seen and cherished, Auntie was a guiding light.

She gave her heart to the young minds she nurtured—whether in the classroom, in the neighborhood, or within our family. She understood that every child deserved to be supported, encouraged, and believed in, and she made it her life’s mission to be that steadfast presence in their lives.

Her legacy cannot be measured simply by lessons taught or blankets sewn, but it is felt by the countless lives she touched and the unwavering kindness she gave so freely.

In honor of Auntie, we ask that you continue her legacy—by showing kindness to a child, encouraging someone’s dreams, or simply offering a listening ear. She lived by the belief that a little love and attention could change a life, and through all of us, that love will never fade.

Auntie will be dearly missed but her love lives in the hearts of all of those who were fortunate enough to know her. If you received a blanket from Auntie, hold it extra tight tonight.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Brooks. Additionally, she leaves behind a close-knit family that includes her sisters-in-law, Terri Sloan (married to Rusty Sloan) and Sandy Thomas (married to Billy Thomas). Evadine enjoyed a special bond with her nieces, Shelly, Misti (Chris) Roesener, and Eva Sloan, as well as her nephews, Michael Thomas, T.R. Sloan, and Jeb Sloan. The joy she brought to her family extended to her great nieces and great nephews: Megan Smith, Morgan Reasoner, MaryKate Sloan, Alaina Sloan, and Charlotte Sloan, alongside Alan, Billy, Jordan, Justin, Jackson, Jacob, Andrew, and Oscar Sloan.

Evadine was preceded in death by her father, Thomas R. Sloan, Sr., her mother, Wilma Sloan, her brothers, Billy Thomas and Rusty Sloan, and her great nephew, Charles Sloan. Each of these individuals held a special place in her heart, and their memories will be cherished by her family.
